Letter to Students and Parents - 2019/20

Dear Students and Families,

Welcome to 6th/7th grade MYP Science! I’m excited about the opportunity to get to know you, and I’m looking forward to a happy and productive 2019/20 school year.

MYP Curriculum areas we will focus on this year for 6th grade include:

MYP Science & California's Next Generation Science Standards , include learning and using scientific inquiry/ engineering, weather and climate, genetics, body systems, human impact, and thermal energy. Within these topics, we will be focusing on patterns, as well as structure and function while engaging in engineering, and technology.

MYP Curriculum areas we will focus on this year for 7th grade include:

MYP Science & California's Next Generation Science Standards, include learning and using scientific inquiry/ engineering, Chemical Reactions, Photosynthesis and cycling of matter, and metabolic reactions in the body systems. Within these topics, we will be focusing on patterns, as well as structure and function while engaging in engineering, and technology.

Students are asked to bring the following supplies to school by August, 23rd:
     - College Ruled 1 Subject Spiral Notebook
     - Handheld pencil sharpener
     - Pencil
     - Earbuds (always carry one in backpack)

My grading policy is:
Middle Years students are expected to meet 4 criteria in science: - Knowing and Understanding - Inquiring and Designing - Processing and Evaluating - Reflecting on the impacts of science Each set of criteria is scored with an 8 point rubric: 7-8 = correct/appropriate,  5-6 = successful/usually correct, 3-4 = some correct, 1-2 = limited. These scores show how students are progressing throughout the semester. At the end of the semester, the “best fit” scores for each criterion are added together to become the MYP Grade.

My homework policy is:

-If classwork is not completed, then it becomes homework.

Special classroom events planned for the year include:
     - Beach or trail cleanup (look for information to come home with your child as the school year progresses).
This is for fun and a way for us to contribute to our community.

Expectations:

               - Be respectful
               - Be kind
               - Be Prepared
               - Phones away unless approved
               - No food in the classroom
               - Do your best

If you have any questions or concerns or if you would like to visit our classroom, schedule a conference, or volunteer to help out, you can contact me at nilufar.kamdar@smusd.org, or 760-290-2000. The best times to reach me are before/after school. My preference for communication is through e-mail since I check it often throughout the day.

Once again, welcome to 6th or 7th grade. Let’s work together to make this the best year ever!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Kamdar
